SSC Business
- Approval of Minutes: Minutes of the February 21, 2008 meeting and the “Special Meeting” of March 6, 2008 were reviewed. Michelle Cook moved to approve the minutes as written; motion passed.
- Public Input: None.
- Review SPSA: Some minor additions had been made to show all SSC-approved budgets and George reported the SPSA had been fully approved by Cansdale. SSC members agreed to review the SPSA and bring questions to the April meeting. Swierczynski noted that Title I funds, being supplementary, should not have to pay for librarians, nurses and counselors.
- Nutrition: George approached Collins Development to assist in supplying nutritious snacks to students during the 3 days of STAR testing. They will supply Smart bottled water and granola bars.
Data Review
Budget
- George shared the current budget statement summary and noted there is enough money for substitutes through the rest of this year.
Advisory Groups
- DELAC – None.
- ELAC - None.
- DAC - None.
- GATE – George reported that they are getting organized to add the seminar class next year with one self-contained class for English and Social Studies in 6th grade. The district funded .66 of a teacher; .33 will have to come from another budget source. The class will fill with other high level students.

Governance Business
- Approval of Minutes: Minutes of the February 21, 2008 meeting and the “Special Meeting” of March 6, 2008 were reviewed. Eleanor Evans moved to approve the minutes as written; motion passed.
- Public Input: None.
- Budget Update: Taft’s budget for 2008-09 is $3,028,817, $215 thousand short of 2007-08. This projects 649 students; 690 including special ed. George predicts the actual enrollment could be more around 715 to 720, which would cause additional staff to be provided by the district. As it stands, Taft will lose one VP. 1 counselor and 5 teachers due to demographics alone (pre budget cuts). District budget cuts sent pink slips to all 2003 and newer teachers. 107,000 teachers were notified of their potential job loss throughout state for the next school year.
- Testing: Taft is entering the STAR, CST and DRP testing windows. There is a jump in CST English requirement from 24% proficient to 36%.
- Master Schedule Update: Dina Weiss provided an update. With staff input, she is working with a tight allocation of 24 teacher CPUs for 2008-09; moving to a 6 period schedule (not block except for 6th grade English); and a 36 student per class average, about 180 per teacher. There will be two groups of Striving Readers (an academic elective), two sections of AVID and two of math support. Other electives will depend on actual teachers assigned here next year and a student survey.
- Benchmark Assessment Data: This testing is required because Taft is a PI 5 school. The first round of test results were bad but better than the district’s average. The second round showed some good results and some not and it’s difficult to know if those results will correlate to STAR testing.
