Writing Exemplars For Second Grade |
|
Here are some examples of 2nd grade writing (exemplars) that might help parents, students and teachers understand what is expected of 7 to 8 year old writers. These exemplars come from The Writing Site, a nonprofit organization funded by the Indiana Department of Education. Before you read these passages, you might want to understand the terms used to describe/classify exemplars: First of all, you might want to learn about genres. During the course of the year, 2nd graders are asked to create compositions using many of the genres listed below.
GENRES
Next, you might want to learn how teachers assess writing. The Writing Site offers examples of two forms of assessment: one is the 6+1 assessment strategy and the other is a strategy developed by the Indiana Department of Education. Teachers at Sunset View might use the 6+1 strategy. They might use the rubric draft developed by our school district or they might simply compare student writing to California Standards using their own criteria as we do in B8.

EXEMPLAR PASSAGES
The following exemplar passages (actual student writing) are provided by the Indiana Department of Education. Although the assessment of these passages is not correlated with California State Standards, the student work is representative of 2nd grade writing and the assessment provided provides insight into how teachers critically look at student achievement and is aligned with nationally recognized assessment.
