The Arts at Sunset View

MEETING NOTES

SEPTEMBER 1ST

Since the last meeting of May 5th, there have been several organizational meetings to hammer out the details of program implementation. Not all committee members were asked to be present at these meetings because they were basically concerned with scheduling, instructional issues and the nuts and bolts of funding.

These meetings are ongoing as we await final classroom configurations. There will be a staff discussion this week regarding scheduling of classes.

As it stands, the order of “instructional theme” will be:

Nine weeks of music, then nine weeks of dance and finally nine weeks of drama. Much discussion centered around the order of the instructional themes as we progress through the school year.  We felt this configuration best suited the developmental needs of Sunset View students.

Denise Lynne has contracted with a music instructor and she will meet with teachers and staff once we have formalized our schedule.

We’ll have more info for you as the program evolves.

MAY 5TH

Committee Members Present:

Roxanne Prine, Theresa Punzalan, Kristen Dennis, Peter Harris, Tammy Eastley, Lynne Shinohara, Jeff Green

Guest: Bill Bailey

Guest Speaker/Presenter: Denise Lynn from VAPA Dept. at SDUSD

NOTES: (these notes are tentative and may be amended)

Theresa contacted Denise to present at this meeting. Denise is the District contact person for Sunset View for all things related to VAPA. Denise has extensive experience in structuring an artist in residence program and has done so at other schools.

Denise stated that the VAPA Dept. will help develop and organize our Artist In Residence Program.

Denise was told that we wanted three 8-10 week programs that would span K-4 curriculum in the areas of Drama, Music and Dance and possibly Visual Arts for fourth grade.

Denise stated that she thought this was a viable concept and presented an outline of a possible program structured by VAPA.

PROGRAM ATTRIBUTES

(tentative outline)

Synopsis: The program will be a comprehensive arts enrichment program which will span all grade levels. It will embrace the areas of Music, Dance and Drama. (Visual Arts for 4th will be discussed at grade level)

What will be taught: The program will adhere to state VAPA content standards. The VAPA Dept. has already created curriculum to address the standards. For detailed curriculum information visit the VAPA website at SDUSD. Teachers will collaborate with Denise and Instructors to uniquely fashion a program suited to our student population with a strong emphasis on seeking to integrate the curriculum.

Timeline: A Program beginning and end date have not been established. The sequence will most probably be Music, Dance and Drama in that order.

Instructors: Denise, as our liaison, will contact and hire instructor/artists. She has extensive experience in this area. We will, if necessary, provide input as to the qualifications of  instructors. Instructors will not be credentialed teachers.

Tentative Cost: The tentative cost for this program will be twenty to twenty five thousand dollars. Specific details and breakouts of proposed expenditures will be submitted to staff and Foundation.

This cost includes instructor/artist hourly wage of $44.00 per hour. This wage includes workman’s comp. Medical is not provided and is not an issue no matter the number of hours worked.

This cost also includes supplies and workshop hourly pay for teachers to meet with Instructor/Artists to uniquely taylor the program to the needs of Sunset View students.

Committee Consensus: Our committee feels that this proposed program constitutes an excellent opportunity for the students of Sunset View. Details need to be worked out, but we feel that this a good first step in creating a long-term artist in residence program at Sunset View. We are encouraged and grateful to Denise for her input.

Next Steps: We will take the outline of this proposal to staff for discussion and input. It is critical that we arrive at a decision within the next two weeks as Denise states the most difficult position to hire will be the Music instructor. A music instructor needs to be identified before the end of the month. Denise has a person in mind.

We will work with Foundation ARTS Committee members and Linda to draft a grant proposal to be presented at the next Foundation meeting.

We will schedule the next ARTS Committee meeting after we have met with staff.

APRIL 20TH

OUR JOB:

To bring a strong fine arts, core curriculum program to Sunset View. Our vision is to have this program be an integral part of the fabric of education at Sunset View for years to come. The program will begin September, 2009.

DISCIPLINES:

What disciplines will be taught and which committee members will research those disciplines:

     DRAMA: (Roxanne and Rebecca)

     MUSIC: (Theresa, Paula and Linda)

FINE ART (4th grade) (Kristen and Tori) Note: Because 4th grade already has music instruction, theirs will be a fine arts strand.

     DANCE (Kathy and Jeff)

CURRICULUM:

The ARTS program will support California State Standards in a multitude of curricular areas in addition to VAPA standards.

ORGANIZATION:

3 Strands will be taught per year.

Recommended length: 10 weeks for each discipline. One hour per week.

Next meeting May 5th. At that time, sub-committees will report their findings.

“Based on a study of over 2000 pupils attending

public schools in grades 4–8, a group of

researchers from Teachers College Columbia

University, found significant relationships between rich

in-school arts programs and creative, cognitive, and

personal competencies needed for academic success .”
