The month of November brings
another opportunity for family and friends to gather
together in celebration. The gift of having one another
should be treasured especially during these economically
challenging times. We acknowledge some families are going
through some financial struggles and want to extend our
support in any way possible. If your family is in need of
shelter or food, please let us know – we have contact
information to assist. When life throws us a curve ball
remember to keep strong your core beliefs and positive
attitude knowing things can and will get better.
The teaching staff and I continue to focus our instruction
on the state standards. The standards are set by the
Department of Education and establish the goals your child
must meet in order to be proficient at his/her grade level.
The standards are rigorous, relevant to future required
skill sets, and demanding. Help your child attain
proficiency by: reading to and with them every night,
challenging their thinking by not answering questions for
them (coach them to find the answers themselves), playing
academic games (instead of action games on computers) with
them, and when you are out and about have them read road
signs, cereal boxes, food labels, etc.. This is called
reading and learning through their direct experience with
their surrounding environment – it is never too late to
start this process. It is also important to model the sounds
of the English language starting at the very early stages of
life so the children can hear, see, and develop the patterns
of language. When your child pronounces a word wrong or does
not use proper English when speaking – correct them by
modeling the correct pattern. Having trouble with spelling?
Practice with your child by doing activities that excite
them – spelling the word to rhythm and songs are the most
powerful way to improve spelling habits. Writing the words
in the sand or flour, finger spelling, painting, etc. the
words also support the process. Active participation in your
child’s learning will increase their chances of success
100%.
THANK YOU to all the new and returning volunteers signing in
this school year. I am always impressed with and grateful
for the number of volunteers our school pulls in. Our
learning environment is enhanced everyday because of the
extra efforts parents, community, and college students give
to the Sandburg Tigers. You are very much appreciated!! I
also want to thank Kari Abulhosn for organizing the Running
Club again this year and thank Dean Kirby and Andy Alli for
facilitating the Cycling Club again this year. Physical
fitness plays an important role in the health of our mind,
body, and soul strengthening academic achievement for those
who partake. Go Tigers!
Thank you to the families who have attended the SBRC
(Standards-Based Report Card) trainings. If you were unable
to attend the 4th and 5th grade trainings you are welcome to
attend the other trainings coming up prior to conferences,
as they are similar in content. Gentle Reminder: a notice
was sent out notifying you that the week of November 17-21
is parent/teacher conference week – everyday will be a
minimum day (school dismisses at 12:00). The Tiger folder
states only four days – we now have all 5 days – please make
a note of this change on your calendars.
Enjoy this Thanksgiving month, be safe and stay healthy!
From my Heart with Sandburg
Tiger Pride!
