  Opening day at
Sandburg was a success. The students and staff have returned
well rested and ready to take on another exciting school year.
A school year that promises to be filled with focused academic
studies in support of our quest to bring all students to
proficiency.
I’d like to
welcome all of our new families to Sandburg. It is a pleasure
to have you as part of our Sandburg team. Welcome! Welcome! I’d
also like to welcome our new Vice Principal, Ms. Janice
Matthews. She joins our team with energy, experience, and a
passion for education. When you see her out and about please
stop by and introduce yourself. For those of you who were here
in years past you have noticed Mr. T is no longer at Sandburg.
He is now the principal at Bay Park Elementary School. We are
all very proud of him and wish him much success with his new
adventure.
Sandburg is
celebrating our recent API (Academic Performance Index) and AYP
(Adequate Yearly Progress – No Child Left Behind) results. We
improved our state standardized test scores by 26 points and are
now an 881 API school. 800 represents a “proficient” score, by
increasing our points we continue to excel in our academic
performance. We met all of our No Child Left Behind (AYP)
targets with flying colors. The Sandburg staff will continue to
work together towards meeting the individual needs of all
our students. It is our common goal to move all children to be
successful at meeting their state grade level standards.
The Sandburg
staff takes great pride in celebrating student success in all
curriculum areas. We acknowledge and applaud all levels of
learning and view mistakes as “acts of learning”. We also
recognize that we can’t do it alone - we need your help in
making sure your child works to their potential. Encourage and
support the homework plan that is required of your student.
Take time to read a book with your child and talk about the
details of the story. Reading is not just about reading the
words, it’s about understanding what the words are saying . . .
the story behind the words is what counts. We need you, your
child needs you . . . together we can make a profound
difference.
The district
has officially changed its name from San Diego City Schools to
San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD). One of the goals of
the district is “curbside” appeal for all schools. Sandburg
embarked on making external changes last year by starting our
beautification program. We were highlighted in the district
Staff Bulletin as being one of the first schools to make
changes. The article is located on our web site for all to
see. Our first Sandburg Beautification day for this school year
is Saturday, September 16 from 8:00am to 4:00pm. Flyers will be
sent home. We look forward to having our community pitch in to
help clean up the campus.
We will
continue to have our Monday morning flag assemblies out
in the center court area. These assemblies begin at 7:45am, all
families and friends are invited to attend. It would be an honor
to have you join us!
