Have you seen the beautiful
flowers blooming in our flower beds around campus? It’s
clear that spring has sprung! What a fabulous time of year
. . .
I apologize
for having to reschedule the Budget Meeting for the
community on March 19, I was called away to a family
emergency. We have rescheduled this meeting for Tuesday,
April 24 at 6:30pm. We will have the same format as was
originally planned, with daycare being provided. We hope to
get a great turnout as there is much to discuss about all
the wonderful things happening here at Sandburg.
Parents we
need your help in preparing your children for the upcoming
state mandated tests. The California Standards Tests (CST)
are scheduled to take place the first two weeks of May.
During these two weeks the campus will be considered a “quiet
zone” as we need to ensure the children are provided
with the best testing environment. There are many ways you
can support your children during this time. Please make
sure they get plenty of rest, a minimum of 8 hours, and eat
a healthy breakfast every day. According to nutritional
research, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
As a service to all the children at Sandburg, K-5,
the district is providing free full breakfasts on Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday the first week of May (May 1, 2 and
3) and the following Tuesday, May 8. It’s important your
children understand the significance of these tests . . .
please encourage them to give their personal best every day
as well as every day they take the tests. There is also
research that supports the brain power and body movement
connection to learning. Ms. Matthews and I will be offering
warm up exercises every day before the tests as a way to get
the children mentally and physically prepared for the
tests. More information will be coming your way as we get
closer to testing time.
Our “call
out” feature to our phone system continues to be tested and
re-tested. The goal is to have it call all the Sandburg
homes with messages from me regarding upcoming events and
gentle reminders. We are experiencing some difficulties and
look forward to the day it works the way it is intended. We
appreciate your understanding and patience while the system
gets worked out. We also plan to use this system in case
there is ever an emergency at the school and we need to get
an urgent message to you. Having said that, we have over
300 families that the system will need to call, therefore it
will take time for the calls to reach all the homes. Please
make sure we have the most updated phone number information
on file in the office.
Did you see
our 5th graders and Marines on KUSI with Rod Luck
on March 23? Mr. Luck highlighted our 11-year partnership
with our Miramar military base (previously US Navy and now
MCAS). We had a great time and the children looked fabulous
on T.V. – check out the
pictures on the web page.
There have
been a few schedule changes since the Special Events
Tiger Folder was sent home in the fall. The
Multi-Cultural Fair was rescheduled to April 12 – a
fabulous Sandburg event, the Jog-A-Thon has been
rescheduled to Friday, April 27 – we hope we have your
support in this important fundraiser and 50’s Day has
been rescheduled for Friday, June 8 – a community event that
requires everyone to come dressed up in 50’s clothes and
ready to dance. Our Beautification Day on Saturday,
April 21 is going to be quite an event. There will be lots
of action that day as well as food and media coverage. I
hope you all plan to attend at some point in the day – the
campus continues to look cheery and bright, thanks to
parents and friends of Sandburg!
Enjoy this
beautiful San Diego weather and remember to log onto our

safe, happy and healthy!
