Observation at the zoo

The Komodo Dragon is now walking slowly down to the corner, through the first bush, to the other and back again. Now the Komodo Dragon is coming forward to the glass. The Komodo stopped just enough not to touch the glass. The komodo is looking at us with it's black eyes. Now the Komodo Dragon is opening it's mouth, I think the Komodo Dragon is yawning. The mouth is opening wider and wider. The Komodo Dragon's mouth is huge. Just as it yawns you could see the inside of the mouth. I can not see anything inside of the mouth. Its red and dark inside. The Komodo Dragon has no teeth at all. When it is yawning, the mouth is open about 90 degrees. The Komodo Dragon closed it's mouth. When it breathes it's throat bulges. When the dragon moves it goes kind of quick. It drags it's tail side to side. Now it is walking up to the other rooms where the water is. It went to the open doorway and it's coming up to the water and is at the other end of the water. It took it's tongue and is licking the water while walking through it. Now it is going back in to the other room. Now it is in the shade with it's face up against the window.

As we arrived at his exhibit he was just sitting there in the shade feeling his yellow tongue against the air and grass. His name is Juanita. When he heard the noise of a man's camera, he came toward the window. As he walked he lifted his whole body off the ground. He dragged his tail along behind him. When he settled, he looked around and lied down. As he blinked his yellow eyelids, you could see a glare in his black eyes. When he turned his head you could see his black earslits. He got up and you could see his yellow underbelly. He walk toward the glass then yawned. He had no teeth! His jaw opened about 90 degrees. When he walked he dug his 2 inch claws into the ground. His claws were black. His body was a greyish-brown color. Then when he went behind some small bushes, we lost sight of him. We looked around and found him in his other room. At first he was sticking his tongue in the water. A moment later he walked through the water and went back into the other room. He stopped in the corner with the most shade. He sat there with his face near the glass for the rest of the time.

A Day in Life, in the Wild

At about 6:00 a.m. the Komodo Dragons go out to hunt. They go out to hunt deer, monkeys, pigs, insects, lizards, rodents, ground-nesting birds, and carrion. When they bite their prey they inject a posion like bacteria in their saliva that slowly kills it. After that they follow it around until it dies. Then they eat it. After they get back from hunting and eating, they go and get a drink or go for a swim in some water. The Komodo Dragons are average swimmers. After that they find a cave, bushes or a place with shade to rest. They rest or sleep about 15 hours of a 24 hour period. The Komodo Dragons resting period is spread out among the day and night.
