NJROTC - it's not just a class, it's an adventure... The school bell rings, students fall into ranks, come to attention, then smartly march into the classroom, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and begin the day's lesson. This is not just any class, but one where order, responsibility and patriotism prevail - it's the NJROTC classroom. The tradition and pride of our NJROTC Unit are reflected by the trophies and class pictures of past and present award-winning Cadets that decorate the classroom walls, recognizing this program as a Naval Honor Unit for the past 13 years. The program's primary objective is to develop the students, called Cadets, into informed, responsible and productive citizens. PLHS and the Navy are partners in this federally mandated program that holds no military service obligation for students taking the course. NJROTC, or Naval Science as it is also called, is taken as an elective course or in lieu of Physical Education. The class meets five days per week, three days are for classroom instruction, one day for drill/PT and one day is for uniform inspection. Classroom instruction includes such subjects as naval orientation and history, oceanography, astronomy, meteorology, leadership, and study of current events. Extra-curricular activities include field trips to military installations, shipboard cruises, competition with other schools in professional areas, participation of Honor Guard, Color Guard, and Drill Teams in parades and similar public appearances and ceremonies, as well as participation at a variety of school events as guides, escorts and ushers. Cadets are heavily involved in community service projects: Feed the Homeless, Adopt-a-Family, sponsor an orphanage, and conduct food/clothing drives. Over 2000 Cadet man hours are expended each year on community services projects. There are also social functions such as picnics, trips to theme parks, and a formal annual Military Ball. The NJROTC Unit is structured and functions just like any paramilitary unit, with several departments to handle administrative, operational, logistical, maintenance, public affairs and drill weapon matters. Under teachers' guidance, Cadets run all aspects of the Unit in their capacity as Staff Officers or members of the Color Guard, the Drill Teams, the Academic Team, the Rifle Marksmanship Team or the Physical Fitness Team. The Cadets have been extremely productive and successful this year, carrying on the great legacy of excellence that our NJROTC Unit enjoys.
