Placement files and transcripts should be requested by the applicant to be sent to the District as soon as possible. All applications and documents will be reviewed to determine if an applicant is qualified for a current or anticipated vacancy.

As vacancies develop for which credentials permit consideration, applicants will be contacted by Human Resource Services to determine their interest and availability. Applicants receive continuous consideration for employment throughout a school year. If an applicant has not served as a substitute, hourly or contract teacher during the school year, it will be necessary to submit a new application, should interest in employment continue for the following year.

Assignment

All teaching contracts are issued "subject to assignment," and no one can be guaranteed a specific school assignment. The Personnel Administration Department assigns staff in accordance with the needs of the district, considering the preferences and qualifications of staff.

Health Requirements

Chest X-Rays or Intradermal Tuberculin Tests must be made by a California physician (either by a private physician, by the County Health Department or by a school nurse for employees located at the school sites).

Insurance

Persons employed on a regular basis for at least half time are eligible for coverage under a Group Health Care Insurance program. Dependent coverage is also available.

Certificated Salary Schedules

Annual Salary Rates for Basic 187-Day Contract Year, Effective July 1, 2003.

Substitute Teaching (Day-to-Day and Long Term)

Candidates living outside of the San Diego area are not encouraged to apply for substitute (visiting) teaching. In general, credential and requirements are the same as for contract employment. Applicants who are or will become local residents are encouraged to become part of our visiting teaching staff. Significant numbers of new contract teaching positions are generally positions confirmed for staffing in early October. Since these positions are temporarily staffed by visitor teachers through September and early October, the advantage of being available for substitute teaching is obvious. The 2004-05 rate of pay is $116.03 per day. Provision is made for an increase to $129.67 per day when an assignment extends beyond five consecutive teaching days in a single assignment.

Employment Requirements

An application interview with a personnel officer is required prior to an appointment upon the substitute teacher list. The following original documents need to be brought to the interview: a California teaching credential or a letter from your college stating that you are eligible for a California teaching credential, a resume, and CBEST verification. An I-9 form is required by the U.S. Immigration Reform and Control Act. To complete this form, a teacher must bring to the office a valid driver’s license and social security card. If these documents are unavailable, please call (619) 725-8150.

Yearly Application

An application for employment will be considered active for ONE YEAR only. Applicants who are not employed after one year, but wish their application to remain active after one year need to re-submit an updated application or submit a written request to keep their application active for one more year to Human Resource Services Division. If not notified to keep your application active, the application folder will be destroyed after two (2) years.
