General Information

Mt. Everest Academy is fully accredited atypical school that assists parents who wish to have their children learn at home using state-adopted curricula with the support, guidance, and supervision of credentialed teachers. The school is located at Wiggin Center in the Clairemont area of San Diego. Our total school enrollment has remained steady at approximately 250 students over the last seven years. We offer services to students (and families) in Kindergarten through 12th grade. Mt. Everest Academy recently earned the Exemplary Independent Study Recognition Award.
The most common method of instruction we use is independent study/home study. All students have a supervising teacher who facilitates enrollment, distributes materials, coordinates their studies, and collects student work. The parent, student and supervising teacher sign agreements that outline what is to be studied and when the work is due. Secondary students also have subject expert teachers who teach study groups and assess student work. Secondary students attend study groups on campus for direct instruction, collaborative learning, and enrichment. We also offer elementary students a variety of support and enrichment activities on campus and throughout the community. Our families receive the same standards-based texts, materials, and teacher support materials that are used in their neighborhood school. Parent involvement and collaboration in a student’s education is a key factor in the high rate of success for home study students.
Mt. Everest Academy is on a school campus in Clairemont that includes a library, computer lab and a science lab. We publish a newsletter that outlines the workshops and other activities we offer such as technology workshops, field trips, Spanish and French for grade 7 and up, fitness activities, science and social studies fairs, 6th grade camp, and music lessons. (See current Newsletter on our website.) Our secondary program is designed as an intense college prep opportunity. Mt. Everest Academy students have excellent study skills and read, write and compute at or above grade level. Many high school students enroll in a community college during high school and are admitted to highly selective colleges upon graduation.
Mt. Everest offers a truly unique school option that includes flexibility for the highly motivated student. Please call for more information.
