Building a Rock Wall

Holmes Elementary has broken ground on the site of the new traversing rock wall. It has taken many meetings, budget revisions, lots of research and implementatioin (Thanks Steve Howard); Installation began May 2008. Once the preliminary legwork was complete, the colors of the rockwall, grippers and topcoat color were chosen. The construction took about a week to complete. They trenched the blacktop and cemented the frame in the ground. They built parts of the wall and connected the grips. The team continually checked for movement and made sure it stayed level. Once the base and structure was built, the installation of the matted base was started. They worked in sections. One team member mixed individual batches and dump it by wheel barrel so the material wouldn't dry out.

Rock Wall Completed

The final base topcoat was applied and dried. The Rock wall is complete. We will have a small ribbon cutting ceremony will all the students present at the beginning of the school day June 2008. The Rock Wall is located in the South East corner of the playground. The students will have access to the stucture during recess, after lunch, and during P.E. Some teachers choose to have outside time and the stucture may be utilized during that time as well. The structure can hold 40 students at a time and it is supervised by an teacher and/or adult volunteer during recess and the P.E. Instructor during each classes individual physical ed time.
