PTA Supported Programs
Back to School Night
An Annual Family event held during the first month of school. This is an opportunity to sign up for PTA and volunteer positions, learn about after-school programs, visit the classrooms and teachers and enjoy the bookfair.
Book Fair
An opportunity to purchase books for your children and teachers while supporting Holmes through this fundraiser. A portion of the sales profits goes directly into the school PTA budget.
Hawkeye Newsletter
Holmes PTA is proud to produce our monthly newsletter, to communicate with our parents valuable information about our school and community.
Halloween Carnival
Safe and fun entertainment for the entire family! All of the booths, games, crafts, activities, food & prizes are chaired and run by parent and student volunteers. Traditionally, this PTA sponsored event takes place on the last Saturday in October before Halloween from 11 am to 4 pm. Chairperson sign-ups usually begin in September, during the Back To School Night event.
Holiday Program
A Holmes School event where each classroom sings and theatrically enhances one or more performances. A reception is usually given by the PTA for parents and guests. A celebration of learning.
Spring Fling
An annual fundraiser/school wide party with a central theme that changes every year. It promises wonderful catered food, live entertainment, gift baskets for raffle and silent auction, games and activities like face painting and relay races. New this year cake decorating show. A wonderful school and neighborhood gathering looked forward to each year by the students, families and community.
Traffic and Safety Patrol
Parent volunteer staffed committee. Help with morning drop-offs at the loading zone and keep traffic flowing smoothly. Volunteers are needed throughout the school year. See a patrol volunteer or sign up in the office.
Caught Ya
A reward incentive for excellent child behavior, action or duty. The PTA funds a treat from Friday afternoon from the 6th grade ice cream sales. Teachers pick students weekly for this incentive.
Holmes Website
The PTA funds, creates, operates and maintains the Holmes school website in an effort to increase communication to parents, children and community. Through volunteering, the website is undergoing a complete redesign for 2007-08 school year.
Media & Technology
Computer skills are essential in today's technological world. We believe that early experience using a computer will help prepare elementary school students for the educational challenges they will face in middle school and beyond. The Media and Technology program provides computer and audio/visual tools to support classroom instruction.
Spelling Bee
Students in grades 1-6 put their spelling skills to the test in the classroom and then at the schoolwide level. Ribbons, medals and trophies are provided by the PTA for this annual event.
Field Trips
Holmes PTA believes that experiences outside the classroom are important for a well rounded education. PTA provides $10 per student for classroom field trips to enhance student learning.
Assemblies
PTA provides funding for our educational assemblies for the school.
Classroom Funds
Holmes PTA provides the classroom teacher with funding to spend for their class each year. Teachers get to chose exactly what their individual clasroom needs. It's a direct way for PTA funding to reach Holmes' students.
Dining For Dollars
Holmes works with a community eatary to host a wednesday night dinner where a portion of bill proceedes go directly to our school.
Talent Show
A variety show which has acts of talent provided by kindergartners - sixth grade that usually has one central theme. There is a performance during the day for students and staff and an evening performance for family and friends. It is usually 2 1/2 hours and boasts of acts like tap dancing, musical instruments, lip singing, dancing of all types, vocals, acting, skits and more.
Library Reading Garden
An enclosed serene area adjacent to the library. This area will enhance our children's reading experience while they are surrounded by the sights and smells of a beautiful garden.
Junior Theater
PTA pays JuniorTheater theatrical artists to teach 3 lessons to each classroom. It brings theater to the classroom.
Founders Day Dinner
Celebrates PTA's anniversary by honoring volunteers of the year with the Honorary Service Award. It is usually coupled with a spaghetti dinner.
Teacher Programs
PTA is able to enrich our teachers by giving them the opportunity to attend outside training classes in areas that they would either like to explore or refresh up on. We want to encourage our teachers to bring new programs to our kids.
Science Field Day Team
Mrs. Morrison trains a team of 4th-6th grade students in different science activities. They compete each spring against other schools.
Friday Night Movies
A night out for the family with your freinds here at Holmes. The movie nights will be held at one of our local parks and will be free to all who attend. With hopes in offering one each quarter.
Guitar Class
Last spring, Mr. Blase received a grant from Taylor Guitars for 25 Baby Taylor 3/4 size quitars. The PTA purchased 10 more Baby Taylors, and committed to funding guitar lessons for all 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classrooms. Mike Mooneyham started as our guitar instructor mid-October and will be on campus on Fridays.
Choral Music Teacher
Starting in March, every K-6 classroom will receive one hour of choral music instruction each week for 12 weeks. Although the district is providing the teacher, this position will be funded by both the PTA and a one-time VAPA grant from the state.
VAPA Training
This year, San Diego Unified is offering VAPA training sessions in Dance, Music, Theatre and Visual Art for our teachers. Art kits and CDs will be purchased by the district and PTA to help the teachers apply the lessons they've learned in their classrooms.
