Green's Magnet Program was implemented in September 1979. Magnet schools first began in the district as a result of a court order in 1977 to alleviate racial segregation in twenty-three non-white isolated schools in San Diego . The emphasis in Athletics and Academics was designed to attract parents and students who would voluntarily enroll in the program.
Small class size, innovative teaching strategies, attention to learning styles and student access to computers are all key elements in the academic program at Green School . We pride ourselves in being able to meet the individual needs of students, whether they are gifted or have exceptional needs. The physical education teachers work closely with the classroom teachers to integrate the literacy framework throughout their activities. Our daily physical education program emphasizes "a personal best and lifelong active lifestyle" through participation in classes such as gymnastics.
Currently, about 70% of our students attend from outside our immediate neighborhood. The enrollment period opens each October 1st and continues through January 31st. When the enrollment period closes, names are randomly sorted and ranked. Incoming students who have older siblings who will be attending Green the following year are given priority on the magnet list.
Green recruits by high school "clusters" of San Diego , no longer by ethnicity. We enroll 70% of our students from clusters 3 & 4. 30% of our students are recruited from clusters 1 & 2. Students are called in the order that they are listed on our waiting list. Transportation is provided for all students attending from the sending communities. For an ethnicity breakdown for Green, please visit the district's School Profiles web page on Green. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the Green Report.
