So that we can continue to ensure the success of its students, the school is hosting
its annual fundraising dinner and auction. This year the theme of the event is
School of Rock and will be held at the House of Blues on March
1st, 2008. Last year's auction raised over $100,000
and had more than 250 people attend. Its success depended on businesses
like yours.
For more information, please contact Dawn Villela
(855.722.4427) or Nicole Repp (859.336.9065), Auction Chairs.
Friends of La Jolla Elementary, Inc. has sponsored an Open Aire Market since
October 1998. The market is open every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. all year
round on the upper field of La Jolla Elementary. La Jolla residents and those of
surrounding communities visit the market for wonderfully fresh fruits,
vegetables, fresh flowers and gourmet foods. A favorite meeting place for young
and old, the Open Aire Market features a delightful atmosphere, live music and
artisans showing fine arts and crafts products. Come support our school and
enjoy the sense of community at the Market.

This fund was opened in May 2002 under the auspices of the San Diego
Foundation. We envision this endowment fund as a long-term solution to
support our school’s library program. A comprehensive library media program
includes a diverse collection of quality books, classes in research skills,
curriculum links and literacy events, all managed by an expert professional
staff. We’ve made significant progress establishing our library but still
have a long way to go. This library fund is essential to provide long-term
financial support. All donations to the funds are 100% tax deductible. Donor
levels for the fund include:
- Under $100 A new library book with nameplate will acknowledge the
donor.
- Bronze ($100 +)
- Silver ($1,000 +)
- Gold ($5,000 +)
- Platinum ($10,000 +)
Donors contributing $100 or more will be acknowledged on a plaque in the
library.
 eScrip
is a simple and powerful fund-raising tool for our school. Best of all, it
doesn’t cost you anything (there are no more yearly membership fees).
Register your Vons Club card and a percentage of all of your
purchases at Vons are automatically credited towards LJES. It is just that
simple!
You may also sign up other credit cards (e.g., Visa, MasterCard,
Discover) and when you use them at registered vendors, a percentage of the
sale will be donated to our school. eScrip is one of our easiest and most
productive fund raising efforts. Sign up today in the main office or visit
http:// www.escrip.com.
Bloom is a site improvement committee of La Jolla Elementary School that
reports to our school’s Site Governance Council. The mission of Bloom is to
beautify the campus at LJES with new hardscape and landscape. The
improvements to the campus are meant to inspire our children as well as
improve our perception of LJES in the community. Fundraising for Bloom will
be done in conjunction with Friends of La Jolla Elementary, Inc. Funds for
Bloom projects will come from new fundraising opportunities in which the
school and the community can participate.
Activities
Sponsored by the PTO
Every Wednesday in the lunch arbor at 12:35 p.m., the PTO sells pizza, frozen
treats and other lunch items to students and families. This is a great
opportunity to regularly visit the school and meet other parents.
Wednesday afternoons, the PTO offers amazing enrichment programs, such as,
Chess, KidsKreations, Yoga, Gymventures and the gymbus, and fine arts. Parents
may choose to have their children participate in one or two classes each
Wednesday for fees paid directly to our vendors. Look for our fliers throughout
the year.
We offer Spanish lessons for beginning, intermediate and advanced students.
Classes are 45-minutes, one morning each week in cycles throughout the school
year. Parents may choose to have their children learn Spanish before starting
their school day for a fee paid directly to the vendor.
The student directory supports "community building" at LJES. Many of our
children’s classmates and friends, new and old, are listed, along with their
home and email addresses, phone numbers and parents’ names. The directory is
helpful in arranging play dates, parent get-togethers and the other "outside of
school" activities so important to building a strong LJES Community. The
directory is researched and published by the LJES PTO, and distributed to all
PTO families.
This LJES Handbook & Calendar details our educational programs, including
special education and support services, as well as general policies and
procedures. It includes a letter from Principal, Donna Tripi, a staff roster,
recess and lunch schedules, health office information, LJES history and details
on parent involvement opportunities such as PTO and Friends of LJES, Inc. The
book’s calendar includes dates of parent conferences, days off and special
events.
Each year, the PTO hosts a Kindergarten barbecue as an informal time to
acquaint new Kindergartners and parents to our school. The PTO provides hot dogs
and hamburgers and incoming parents bring side dishes and desserts. Students and
parents meet the teachers, administrator and our parent group representatives.
It really eases the anxiety of incoming Kindergartners who will have played in
their playground and met the teachers before the first big day!
Each year we have a Back to School Picnic for our families. It is a wonderful
way to catch up with old friends and meet the new families at our school.
Families can bring a picnic dinner or can purchase dinner at school.
We will have outdoor (in case of rain it will be moved to the auditorium)
movie nights for our families. Families can bring a picnic dinner. The movie is
provided by the PTO. There will be popcorn, baked goods and glow in the dark
necklaces for sale. We will not be selling dinners at these events.
We turn our campus into a science lab! Students and parents walk from station
to station conducting scientific experiments with a common theme. There will be
dinners for sale at this event.
For more information contact Debbie Balmat at
dbalmat@sandi.net
or Cathy Wallace at cwallace@sandi.net.
Our creative parents and students design and make a float for the La Jolla
Christmas Parade. All students are encouraged to participate by riding on the
float or walking beside it on the day of the parade .
Put on your dancing shoes and come dance in our auditorium to a live band!
Cookies and punch are provided. For a small fee you can purchase a professional
portrait from an on site photographer. For more information contact Melinda
Gaffney at melindagaffney@hotmail.com
The PTO puts on a talent show to give our students a venue for showing off
their talents. For more information contact Pilar Gimber at pilargimber@yahoo.com
New families whose child or children are transferring into LJES from another
school (not starting kindergarten) will be paired together with an existing LJES
family, who can mentor them through their first year. For more information on
this program please contact Natascha Vossen at (858)344-9172 or
nataschavossen@san.rr.com
Our entire campus turns into a Mexican fiesta. We have booths with crafts,
food, games, etc. There are mariachis strolling around, real Aztec dancers are
performing and tasty Mexican food is available for sale. The PTO pre-sells
bracelets for the game booths and tickets to buy food, juice margaritas and
gifts. For more information contact Katie Riveroll at katieahumada85@hotmail.com
If you apply for a Target guest card, 1% of all your guest card purchases
will go towards our school. Applications are available in the office and at all
Target stores.
Book Fairs
Book fairs provide opportunities for students and parents to select quality
books at affordable prices. Books are supplied by competitive organizations and
parent volunteers supervise the fairs at school. There is one book fair in the
fall of each year.
The Birthday Book Club is a great way to share your child’s
birthday with everyone at school and create a lasting memory for you and your
child. If you sign up for this program to buy a book, one will be selected
specifically for your child and presented to him/her in the classroom on his/her
birthday. A special inscription plate is added with your child’s
name and birth date on it and the book is donated to our school library where
your child can read it and share it with others for years to come.
Book fairs
provide opportunities for students and parents to select quality books at
affordable prices. Books are supplied by competitive organizations and parent
volunteers supervise the fairs at school. There are two book fairs a year – fall
and spring.
